Research

Current Project

  • Compass Web Search Engine (09/2003-present)

This is the major project of our research group. We established our own distributed web search engine with several unique attributes. Our search engine now is under trial run. We hope it will soon be published and attract more members. My work is focusing on the management of web page crawler and high performance crawling strategy. How to effectively maintain the freshness of our downloaded pages within limited time and hardware resources is still one of my interest areas. Because of the distributed nature, our search engine confederation is composed of several members which are small search engines. I recently began to find the way of how to automatically select confederation members which include web sites in the same community.

Past Projects

To my knowledge, this is the first and largest search engine which only crawls and indexes IPv6 web sites. Our IPv6 search engine not only continuously discovers new IPv6 sites through out the world, but also gives some useful statistics about IPv6. For example, the country distribution and top-level domain distribution of IPv6 sites, the ratio of pure IPv6 and dual stack sites, the top ten sites which get highest inverted links. We have accumulated the evolution information of global IPv6 sites for more than two years.

  • IPv4 to IPv6 Site Mirroring for CERNET2 ( 12/2004 )

More than 25 university web sites of CERNET were mirrored to CERNET2 which is the biggest trail net of China Next Generation Internet (CNGI) and only supports pure IPv6.

This is my undergraduate thesis work in the frame of our compass web search engine. I realized and compared several crawling strategies which all based on inverted links. Although my strategy was rudimentary compared with the well-established crawling strategies, it already largely improved the efficiency of our web crawler. I also solved the problem of duplicated web sites of various types.

  • Fast decoding algorithm of Variable Length Codes. ( 11/2003-05/2005 )

Joint source channel techniques based on Variable-Length Coding (VLC) have been widely used. One of the most famous VLC decoders is optimal Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) decoder based on directed graph search and soft-input theory. Due to the high complexity of directed graph search, many reduced complexity methods have been proposed. We proposed two error restricted algorithms for fast MAP decoding of VLC and compare them with existing methods. We also analyzed the symbol error-correcting ability and computational complexity of our proposed methods as while as three existing decoders.

Activity and Interests

This Symposium had been held once a year by the Professional Committee of Network of China Computer Federation. This year, the symposium was held together by the Network Center of Tsinghua University, and I was nominated as the chief assistant who is in charge of finance, local arrangement, conference management, and conference web site.

  • Participate in Leadership Tomorrow program. ( 07/2005 )

This program is a cultivation program for two weeks which is designed to develop students' leadership capabilities through language enrichment, critical thinking, career planning, social activities and cultural events with American teachers. The courses are very intensive and effective. We spend nearly ten hours a day talking with our teachers. From this program, I not only improved my English communication ability and confidence, but also realized the importance of thinking outside the box. This program is also a cultural intercommunion. The teachers and we shared a lot of experiences and opinions on social affairs, morality, religion and so on. We have become very good friends and visited the Great Wall together. After the program, we spontaneously organized a biweekly English salon, and I hosted the second salon.

  • Initially planned and organized the activity named " Green Greeting Card of Recycled Paper". ( 12/2000 )

At the end of every year, most students were busy at buying Greeting Card for the Christmas and the New Year. Although E-cards have already appeared for several years, the tradition of sending paper cards, which would be considered as the waste of wood, is still prevailing. After coming up with the idea of producing Greeting Card by recycled paper, I invited a friend from China Central Academy of Fine Arts to scheme out seven different art designs. Within ten days, we found a warm-hearted sponsor, printed five thousand fine cards by recycled paper, and encouraged all our classmates to sell the cards in four major universities in Beijing . This series of activities were also reported by a local newspaper. Finally, we donated all the gained money to the national Hope project which gives financial support to poor students.

  • Interests

I like many kinds of sports, especially playing basketball. I am the captain of the team in my class and a key player in the team of my department.

I also enjoy music and painting. In my freshman year of undergraduate study, I am crazy about 3D graphic. There are some of my creations rendered by 3Dmax at that time.

Part time Work Experiences

  • Program design of the elevator's central controller for a German company. ( 08/2004-04/2005 )

One of my roommate and I were entrusted by a German company to design the central controller of their elevators. Our program was first tested on a simulation board, which consists of Intel 80186, an old but convenient CPU, and several peripheral equipments. After several months of coding and debugging, we designed an easy configurable elevator program which can be used in all series of that company's elevators and supports the coordination of two parallel lifts. By now, our program controls more than one hundred elevators running in several cities through out China. This program has held a China Patent.

  • To design and produce an equipment which can measure the attributes of crystal oscillators under high frequency. ( 12/2004-05/2003 )

One of my roommate in undergraduate class and I were committed by ShouGang group, which is the largest steel company in Beijing, to design an hardware and the corresponding software in order to measure the attributes of crystal oscillators. We learned that the attributes of crystal oscillator can be calculated by passing through high frequency signals (around 100MHz) and noting the decrease in voltage. Then we designed and produced a PCB which can continuously generate high frequency signals, count down the decrease in voltage and send the result to PC to calculate.
